Still Chipping Away: One More Song Done, “Ghost Dance”

Really there isn’t a ton to say about the recording process here since all I’m doing is capturing DI tracks for now – the fun will start once I start reamping. But, I finished another song in two sessions, a few hours yesterday and maybe one or two more today.

This one does have a name, “Ghost Dance,” and it’s a song I wrote around what became the chorus figure. Here’s the outro, where the chorus evolves into a solo:

There are only two updates worth noting, as I go through here. One, with every song I track, I can hear my playing getting tighter; the last song was kind of a struggle, but it’s starting to pay off. Recording really is amazing practice.

And two, the reason this required a second day is I started work a while after a late breakfast with a pot and a half of coffee on board, and worked through what should have been lunch. And, when I got to the outro (skipping the main solo for the time being, I’d wanted to do that last) I could just feel myself getting jittery from too much caffeine and not enough food. I could feel my playing getting worse and worse, and for whatever reason that first bent note in the outro solo, I didn’t have the muscular control to really make that “soar” right, it just sounded weak and flat. So, I called it, got ready to go out that night, and this morning, hit it in only a couple takes.

Your mental and physical state REALLY matters, when recording. That’s been an eye opening lesson for me this time around.
