Last Song Done, On to Reamping

That’s only 99% true as I have one or two overdubs left, but… the main melody guitars and solo are done for the last song on this album. It feels great to be able to write that.

This song I was never sure if it was going to make the cut, and it almost didn’t – I didn’t love a few things about the demo (notably the drums were grating, and a too-gritty clean-ish toned rhythm part was jarring), and it still had an improvised solo in a song ewhere it needed something a lot tighter than that. But, I figured I’d add it into the mix with the rest of the album, fix those issues in the arrangement whole cutting final tracks, and hope I could write a solo in time. And, after finishing the last song, I listened to what I had a couple times on a flight and felt like everything hung together pretty well without it, so I was going to leave it off… until I found an old video with a solo section idea that actually sounded like it had a lot of promise. So, I spent the last week or so writing a solo, and then recorded it this weekend.

Getting melody takes actually went faster than expectede, but the solo I was just twqo run down after a long weekend, and was a struggle; I ended up having everything click for two great takes in between several mediocre ones and comped together most of the final take from those two.

I recorded a video for it today, partly to havbe something to share and partly so I wouldsnt’f orget what I played:

I had been thinking of selling this 3120, but I think it sounds great here (if anything, the gain should come down a little, whgich surprised me since I didn’t think I was using a ton). That Dimarzio AT-1 breathed new life into this guitar.

I do have a couple slide overdubs to do on this song (I did some last night and I’m not sure they’re keepers), and I need to liasten back abnd make sure I got everything on my punch list for the rest of the album, but at this point, it MIGHT be just the last of the drum sequencing, and then mixing.
